Dr James is a board certified pediatric dentist and has completed an independent series of voluntary examinations by the only ADA recognized certifying board for pediatric dentistry, the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. This is a qualification that helps you know that you have chosen well in your search for a pediatric dentist. Board Certification is the highest level of credentials that a pediatric dentist can achieve.

First, Dr. James completed an accredited residency in Pediatric Dentistry. This is additional training beyond dental school for 2 years at OHSU. Dr. James completed a total of 10 years of education in order to provide specialty care for your child.

Next, Dr. James became a candidate for board certification by taking a voluntary written qualifying exam. After successfully completing this exam, Dr. James applied and successfully completed the final voluntary oral examination. Dr. James is in a select group of pediatric dentists. Less than 40% of all pediatric dentists have been granted board certification.

“ Pediatric Dentistry is an evolving field. I learn new things every day. I learn from parents as well and I respect the opinion of the parent as much as my own. I am here to provide information and options. I welcome second opinions and most of all the opinion of the parent.”

QUALIFYING EXAMINATION

The Qualifying Examination (QE) is one section of the two-part certification process for Diplomate status in the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.  The examination is designed to generate evidence toward validation of the candidate's advanced training in pediatric dentistry. The QE must be successfully completed prior to registering for the Clinical Section of the certification process.

ORAL EXAMINATION

The purpose of the Oral Clinical Examination (OCE) is to enable the candidate to demonstrate proficiency in diagnosis, treatment planning, and clinical care. The examination is composed of two parts, each is one-hour in duration, timed, and given during the same session. Each of the two parts are administered by a pair of examiners. Each one-hour part consists of four clinical protocols (vignettes) that are presented to the candidate for discussion.
